the critical place // research study for the design project
The Critical Place is a second part of my Graduate Project at BA Interior Design at Chelsea College of Arts. The first part of this study is called “The Critical Viewer”.
In “The Critical Place” I analysed different types of spatial activators in the context contemporary exhibiting spaces. I discussed the impact of spaces including activities such as eating or communal co-operating, as the strategy to create an efficient community, able to initiate critical discussions and debates about common issues and values. Reflecting on the speakers’ discussion in the article for Tate Inc. “The White Cube and Beyond” on the effectivity of using different spatial typologies as the activators, I expended on it by analysing case studies: Barbican Estate in London, Fabrika Hostel in Tbilisi and community participatory initiative - Open Jazdow in Warsaw. Parallel to the case studies, I introduced the site, briefly explaining its history, current use and analyse the materiality and spatial characteristics. Finally I introduced the concept for ‘the critical place’ art centre, presented the programme proposal, technical drawings, space circulation and zoning diagrams and conceptual visuals of the space.
