co-creating with nature // curator
SustainLab Show
13-17th May 2024
SustainLab RCA, a sustainability society at the Royal College of Art, presents its annual exhibition revealing RCA students’ works that embed sustainability through an exploration of materials and processes.
‘Co-creating with Nature’ explores environmentally conscious works of artists and designers who commit to sustainability through thinking about alternative systems and processes in their practice. Inviting nature as a co-creator, collaborator, and protagonist of narrative-making, the exhibition suggests the possibilities of creating collective forms of art with nature.
In What Is an Author (1969), Michel Foucault redefines the notion of author, subject, and subjectivation by integrating with heterogeneous elements, such as human and more-than-human. As Foucault challenged the pre-existing notion of the author in his book, the exhibition questions the binary notion that perceives humans as subjects and more-than-human beings as objects in art-making.
By featuring Design and Fine Art as separate exhibition spaces running simultaneously, we are allowing “the human” to observe and gather from the “more-than-human” however interchangeable in different environments.
