kettle’s yard. a curation; an artwork?

as a composite, it is a careful ensemble of found and foraged objects, a kind of patchwork that suggests a loose coming together, some kind of deregulated togetherness. a gathering.

‘come as often as you like, the place is only alive when used’

in these words of welcome, written by creator jim ede in a letter from 1964, presented is the openness and generosity that embodies kettle’s yard. an open invitation, to viewers, speakers, readers alike. upon entering you can’t but help to feel at home.

the inventory of objects in kettle’s yard wildly surpasses one thousand. yet the prevailing feeling within the house is one of peace and quiet order. there is no hierarchy throughout the collection; things are arranged to prompt aesthetic enjoyment and conversation between objects. everything organically takes its own place and is of equal value.

ede’s work is more than a collection. his curation at kettles yard, his home for many years before it became an official contemporary art gallery, is an artwork that was nurtured over a lifetime.

the house is truly an experience to cherish.
